Our story

The Old Hangar a Gathering Place for Timeless Ideas

Welcome to The Old Hangar, a space where history and creativity come together. What was once an old hangar has been transformed into a brand that celebrates character, craftsmanship, and community. We believe that every corner tells a story, and we’re here to create new ones with you.

At The Old Hangar, we value authenticity and timeless design. Whether you’re here to explore, connect, or create, our mission is to provide an experience that feels both familiar and inspiring. More than just a brand, we are a gathering place for ideas, stories, and people who share a passion for things that last.

Step inside The Old Hangar, and discover where the past meets the present—crafted with care, built with vision, and always looking forward.

A snippet of history

Established in 1913, Bethany has been the home of the Bjelke-Petersen family for over 110 years. Spanning across 900 acres of rolling hills and grazing paddocks, the property offers breathtaking panoramic views of the South Burnett region, stretching up to 180 degrees from The Wedding Pad—the highest hill in the district.

In 1952, Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen and his sister Agneta (the “J&A” featured on The Old Hangar’s sign) launched an agricultural aviation business, using Tiger Moth aircraft’s to service local farms. Several original artifacts from The Old Hangars aviation era remain on-site, illuminated at night to showcase this unique chapter of Bethany’s history. Sir Joh and Lady Flo made Bethany their family home, raising their children and grandchildren here while it served as a hub throughout their political careers.

Fast forward to April 2024, when The Old Hangar was converted into a wedding and events venue, complementing the iconic Bethany Cottages perched on top of the hill. With the support of their parents and family, Rachel and Christian celebrated their surprise wedding reception under the fairy lights, marking the beginning of The Old Hangar’s new life. We now welcome couples, families, and friends to create their own unforgettable moments here—celebrations filled with laughter, love, and the same sense of connection that started it all.

Who you will meet today

Bethany is, and always has been, family-run. Every decision, every improvement, and every event is handled by the people who live here and carry its history forward. When you’re here, you’re working directly with the family who call this place home — and that responsibility matters to us.

You’ll meet John ‘Papa’, cattle grazier and keeper of Bethany’s story, heart, and history. Karyn ensures your stay at Bethany Cottages is comfortable while supporting operations behind the scenes (also one of the many guardians of Granny’s pumpkin scone recipe). Christian is The Old Hangar’s hands-on handyman, shifting arbours, lighting the fire, handling the heavy work, and tending to the animals, and Rachel is the Wedding and Events Coordinator, guiding you every step of the way from your first visit through to your wedding day.
